Professor Rubin was elected "Academico" of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes y Ciencias Historicas de Toledo, Spain was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award by the University of Houston. The government of Spain has distinguished him with the Officers' Cross of the Order of Isabel la Catolica. Dr. Rubin was a founding member of the Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston and its President. He taught at the University of Houston's College of Humanities and Fine Arts for some twenty eight years and served on the Boards of Directors of the Art League of Houston. He was elected "Socio Honorario" of the Real Sociedad Colombina in Huelva, Spain. NIBUR is a self-taught artist whose activity spans most of his adult life. This retrospective exhibit covers the period 1985 to 2001, where one can observe his stylistic and thematic evolution. The early years are represented primarily by ink drawings on paper, covering a wide range of figurative abstractions and themes, followed by acrylics on paper, panel on wood and canvas, mostly abstract renderings reminiscent of the some the contemporary Spanish and American masters. Several of his works are titled in Spanish, "Homenaje a Picasso," "Homenaje a Miro..." Professor Rubin's largest work is a tribute to the Quincemtennial Anniversary of the Americas in 1492. He was invited to exhibit his work in Seville, Spain, in April 1992. |
